Pharaoh Tutankhamon (c. 1341 BC to 1323 BC), sometimes referred to as King Tut, was the twelfth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt, ruling from 1332 to 1323 BC. When he ascended the throne of Egypt he was only eight or nine years old and is, therefore, sometimes referred to as the boy-king. During his reign, he restored the traditional Egyptian religion, which had been set aside by his father, Akhenaten. He further empowered the priests of the ancient religion, restored his he ancient monuments and restored the capital to Thebes. When he died aged just 19, Tutankhamon disappeared from history until his tomb was discovered in 1922. The discovery of his nearly intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings by British archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter (1874-1939) on November 4, 1922 , funded by Lord George Herbert Carnarvon, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (1890-1923), was an absolute worldwide archaeological sensation with over 5,000 incredible artifacts uncovered, including its now famous gold death mask. Since then, studies of his tomb and his remains have revealed much about his life and pharaonic times, making Tutankhamen the best-known ancient Egyptian king.
